Velvet does something no other fabric does: it absorbs light instead of reflecting it, so a velvet bow tie reads as depth rather than shine. Every colour here is vegan, and all of it is cut and sewn to order in our workshop in Britain.

Why velvet, and when
Satin is the traditional choice for black tie because it catches the light. Velvet does the opposite — under candlelight or a low-lit reception it goes soft and almost bottomless, which is why it has become the alternative for anyone who finds satin a bit sharp. It suits winter far better than summer, and it is the fabric to reach for at Christmas parties, December weddings and evening events where everyone else is in black satin.
Colours worth knowing about
Black velvet is the one most people arrive for, and it’s the safest departure from a plain black satin tie without breaking a dress code. Beyond that: navy for something quieter than black, claret red and burgundy for autumn, peacock blue and bottle green when the occasion allows more, truffle and copper for winter tailoring, and dusky pink and fuchsia for weddings. Every one is available in our standard shape and in the large evening size.
Vegan, and made to order
Our velvet is 100% vegan — no silk, no animal products. And because nothing is made until it’s ordered, the colour you receive comes from a single run rather than whatever batch happened to be in a warehouse. For a wedding party ordering several, that’s the difference between a match and a near-match.
