Dickie bows, and why they came back
Dickie bows have been a small but statement accessory for centuries, and they have seen a real rise in popularity as a way of dressing formally without defaulting to a business necktie. With everyone from Doctor Who to James Bond wearing one, they refuse to go out of fashion. And while some people still see a dicky bow tie as strictly formal, it doesn’t have to be — the range of styles, colours and themes here means there’s a bow tie for most occasions, not just black tie ones.
Self-tie or pre-tied
A self-tie bow tie is a strip of fabric you knot yourself. It sits properly against a wing or turndown collar, and the bow is never quite symmetrical — which is the point, because it’s how anyone can tell you tied it. Our step-by-step guide takes about ten minutes to learn from.
Pre-tied bow ties hold their shape on an adjustable strap that fastens behind the neck. They look identical in photographs, they don’t work loose over a long evening, and they’re the sensible choice for groomsmen and school formals. Both types adjust to fit a 14″ to 19″ neck.
Shapes
Standard is the classic butterfly and suits most collars. Large evening is the boldest — the wing shape brought back into fashion by Hollywood and music stars, and one of our best-selling ranges. The diamond point is smaller with pointed tips, and the skinny bow tie, also known as batwing, has straight parallel edges and sits neatest under a narrow collar. Fabric, colour and print
Plain satin is the black tie standard and carries the most sheen — start with our black bow ties if you’re dressing for a formal event. Faux silk is matte and lightly textured. Velvet is vegan and has a depth that suits winter.
